When pool decks and surrounding hardscape radiate that stored heat back into the water overnight, temperatures rarely drop more than a few degrees before the next day’s sun restarts the cycle.

For pools with southern or western exposure, little shade, or darker finishes (dark plaster absorbs more solar heat), temperatures above 90°F are not uncommon by July and August. At those temperatures, chlorine dissipates faster, beneficial chemistry becomes harder to maintain, and the pool stops being refreshing. How Pool Chillers Work

A pool chiller operates on the same refrigeration principle as an air conditioner, but applied to pool water instead of air. Where a heat pump extracts warmth from ambient air and transfers it into the pool, a chiller extracts heat from the pool water and expels it into the air.

Pool water circulates through the chiller unit, passing across a refrigerant heat exchanger. The refrigerant absorbs heat from the water, which the unit’s condenser fan then expels outside. The cooled water returns to the pool, gradually reducing the overall temperature toward the target setpoint.

Inverter-driven pool chillers adjust compressor speed to match the cooling demand in real time, rather than cycling on and off at full capacity. This reduces energy consumption significantly and extends equipment service life.

Properly sized dedicated chillers can bring a pool down from 92°F to 82°F and hold it there throughout the summer months.

Dual-Mode Heat Pump and Chiller Units. Several inverter heat pump models in our catalog — including units from the AquaCal TropiCal inverter line — include a cooling mode as a built-in feature. If you’re installing a new heat pump or replacing an aging unit, selecting a dual-mode model adds modest cost but provides full-season temperature control from a single piece of equipment. Heat in winter, cool in summer, controlled from the same interface.

Aerators and Fountain Attachments. For mild cooling needs — reducing pool temperature by 3°F to 5°F — aerators and water features help by increasing surface evaporation during overnight hours. These are not a substitute for a chiller on a pool regularly hitting 90°F, but they can be an inexpensive supplemental measure or a useful addition alongside a chiller.

Night Circulation Strategies. Running the pool pump during overnight hours, when ambient temperatures are lower, can help dissipate some of the day’s accumulated heat. This works best in combination with a chiller rather than as a standalone approach, but it’s a no-cost operational strategy worth implementing regardless.
